Nevermind your Desktop, here’s BumpTop!

I was surfing for some cool stuff today and found this on Viral Video Chart;

Coincidentally, I was contemplating to download either Yahoo! Widgets or Google Desktop earlier to organize and prioritize my work files, to-do-list, e-mails, mp3s, videos, etc. so after googling ‘BumpTop’ and read some reviews I decided to give it a try.

Developed as a Master Thesis by 27 years old Canadian Anand Agarawala, BumpTop 1.0 was released recently after 3 years of beta testing. It was first premiered at TED Conference in 2007 and received good reviews from the media and public. Basically BumpTop is;

a desktop environment, designed to enhance traditional computer desktop functionality by more closely supporting the normal behavior of a real world desk.

It’s like a 3D virtual view of your desktop interface with all the documents, files, icons, etc. You can move them around, stack them, stick it on the surrounding walls for reminder, enlarge the size of the files to its importance, and throwing things around for e-mail, printing, copying even uploading to social media sites. Desktop organizing has never been this fun!

If you know me, I don’t like to see any icons on my desktop, but after downloading and using it, BumpTop seems to enhance my productivity by giving me the freedom how to prioritize my files while at the same time make my desktop looks gewwwd!  It certainly gave a new name to the word Desktop, and I’m afraid the click-and-drag routine will soon be replaced by its push-and-pull command.

Currently BumpTop is only available for Windows and comes in two versions- a fully-featured ‘Pro’ version for $USD29 and ‘Free’ version minus the ‘toss to USB’, ‘most used files automatic grow’, ‘piles flipping’ and limited ‘thumbnail preview’ features. Future versions will include for Linux and Mac(bye bye Dock!), API for developers to create widgets, and connect multiple desktops online for collaborative work.

BumpTop is available for touch screen PCs, and somewhat looks like the Microsoft Surface, but it works best for home-users without touch screens. Few efforts tried to revamped the desktop like 360 Desktop and Real Desktop, but this one takes the trophy home. It’s simply more funktional, funkier and fresher! Rating: 4.5/5(I have to try the Pro version!)
