The Rahmat

Fact:

We’ve gone from floppy disks to compact discs to thumb drives. Not to mention digital video discs, flash drives and blu-rays. The storage sizes are getting larger but the devices are getting smaller and cheaper everyday, fast.

Question(s):

What will the medium our information/data/files/media be stored in the future?

I’ve around 600++GB of storage at home and is approaching its limit by the day with millions of files of documents, photos, design and video works, movies, music, etc. And I’ve been only saving them since ‘94, although some files are gone because of two consecutive virus attacks in ‘03.

Say in 20, 50 years down the road, will they still be stored in the same medium? And where?

This question came to mind after I had a talk with the boss about how he know this guy back in South Africa whose hobby is to film wildlife on videos(like those on National Geographic) and would keep them in VHS tapes. Yes, the video tapes that we used to go gaga over when we were in primary and high school.

The guy has hundreds(maybe thousands) of tapes carefully kept in a room in his house. He’s a perfectionist and used to own a color-separation company and would QC the colors on the prints in every detail. At home, he would only film and watch high quality videos, and after editing them, have the final output straight from the computer onto the plasma screen(a huge one I presume) in the living room.

Talk about old skool purists, huh?

Even with all these digital storage easily available today, he refuses to use and transfer to them as they might decompress the video thus deter the quality. But the boss did say the guy had an “orgasm” over the recent high-definition she-bang! LOL!

So that made me ask, where will our HDDs or DVDs be soon? A designated store room in our house? Or if there’s a smaller device, will it too be stacked full at our disposal then? That’s for only one insignificant being’s media storage, what about the rest of the 6 billion populations’?
