Karipap Daging’s Sunburst KL ‘08 Review (Pt. 2/5)
We didn’t managed to catch Gigi’s set at the Pesta Malam Indonesia back in 2006, so of course we went across the field to the main Sun Stage to watch them play. Armand the vocalist was very energetic and animated and at times seemed as if he’s doing some silat moves! He’s quite a character and funny as hell making remarks on his bandmates and the crowd. He told us not to clap to their songs, as he considered clapping is “klise(cliché)”, but instead he told us to shout “Ohhh… ohhh… ohhh” in a certain melody sang prior by him for signs of approval for their performance. And so “Ohhh…” we went!
Next up beside at another main Sky Stage was Malaysian rap rock ambassador, Pop Shuvit. They played a mix of old and new songs including their first single, a Kris Kross cover, Jump and from their latest album, Freakshow. Dandee from Silk Sounds even made it from Bangkok to guest rap on the song. I was hoping them to play the latest single, Pump Up The Stereo remix that they did with DJ Cheapshot of Fort Minor and Joe Flizzow, since he’s also on the concert line up, but they didn’t. It was during their set the rain started to pour(so much for “sun”burst, huh?) and thankfully we bought ourselves raincoat earlier and managed to stay the whole set. Some had umbrellas, some just stayed there in the rain rocking the muddy mosh pit!
The rain slowed down abit right after their set and we rushed back to Era Stage again to catch Love Me Butch. Too bad when we got there they were already playing their last two songs. I think the first one was a new song, but it kind of sounded the same as their other songs, so I was abit disappointed. I don’t know, is it just me, or they’ve run out of ideas to innovate? Considering how their music beautifully evolved from their first debut to their second album. But they played the crowd favorite, Hollywood Holiday as the last song, but was stopped abruptly midway as the guitarist’s, Meng, amp monitor blew up, maybe was short circuited from the rain.
We headed for the food and beverages canopies and people were already lining up for lunch, some was just finished eating and resting. We went to the Pink Sage(cool name) booth where they served western dishes. We got ourselves some food coupons and ordered macaroni and cheese and some barbecue chickens for RM20. Quite pricey, but we were so hungry and the stall had the shortest queue compared to others(maybe because of the price?). But the food was nice and hot and we were freezing so it was good.
